Land Beyond the Veil
a M'laniri tale.
The forests of the M'Lani Isles were quiet and damp on this full moon night, the crickets chirped, the birds, and squirrels slept, and all the nocturnal animals went about their business.
The Forest seemed to be asleep, and empty, but this was not true. The Native People, the M'Laniri, were all about, preparing for a momentous occurence. The Priestess was giving birth. Aiyana felt pain beyond anything she had ever known, but knew it was worth it.
She went deep within herself for strength. She seemed to hear the screams as if she were standing beside herself, but the pain was still there, and it was excruciating.
Eight hours passed in the tiny leather pavilion she called her home, when finally the baby left her little hiding place within her, and breathed the first breaths of life. Someone patted Aiyana on the back, but she had no idea who, she was unconscious of everything around her, that was, until the babe was placed into her arms.
She looked down at the tiny, swaddled form, and said, "Dyani, welcome to the world." The baby began suckling, and she sighed tiredly.
Our story, however, begins ten years later...
Chapter One; the Beginning of Wisdom.
"Pay attention, Dyani!" The priestess said, as she rapped the girls knuckles hard, "You must learn to control that over active Imagination, if you are ever to become a Priestess!"
"I don't want to be a priestess, I want to be a Magi-Warrior, like my Half-Sister, Anaya!" Dyani vented her fury by throwing one of the writing charcoals at the wall. She had drawn herself wearing armor fit for Magi-Warriors, and throwing the Wrath of the Goddess at an enemy, the Priestess took one look at the drawing, and effaced it from the slate it was drawn on, "Todays work is complete, I suppose, I told you to draw where you were going to be in ten years..." She put it to mind to consult the Elder later in the day.
Dyani, distracted as she was by her own thoughts, heard that, and took off toward her home. She saw that the Flap was open, and walked in. Her mother looked at her with a weary smile, and said, "How is my little Daydreamer doing?"
"Oh, you know, daydreaming." She said. This was an ongoing joke in her family. The others were always level headed, and serious, Dyani was different, she liked to believe there was more than protecting their borders from the C'Nero, a race of Wolf-Like people from the Northern-most point of the M'Lani Isles.
Anaya piped up, with, "Dyani, you need to get your head out of the clouds, girl. You have barely Ten summers to you, and you are still acting like a swaddling at times." She giggled, and pattedn Dyani's head, which enticed a wrestling match between the two females.

Two days later, the Magi-Warriors left to go investigate an attack on one of the Smaller tribes, so Aiyana was at the Temple day and night, and Dyani was free to do as she wished.
She left to go to the Forest, and explore. The Tirbe had a Neutral ground with a few of the C'Nero, and Humans, which had come so recently into the mix, so she went to Tatalthin Village. Her own Village, Veron, Was the Crown Jewel of the M'Laniri, the Temple was made of Stone, and it was an archetectual masterpiece. Arched Roof, Tiled walls, and Paintings the artists of the Humans would be in awe of, the very center of the Temple was a mixture of Green, blue, and white. The colors of the goddess.
Tatalthin, a shabby little backwater ramshackel village, was made in haste after the great Famish. See, what was taught to her, was that, A Long time ago, when the first tribes, Wolf, Hawk, and Bear, set out to find their places, they made a Blood Pact that if war, or famine betook these strange lands, they would set out to help each other. This Covenant, or V'Rilian Togrona, Has been used only once, in a time of Great Famine for the Hawk tribes.
In here reverie, she did not notice the little human girl, of about her age, before she stumbled over her. The girl got up quickly, saying, "Are you okay? Whe- Oh, your a M'Laniri... I-I should go..."
Dyani stood up, and said, "Its okay, I can't do much yet, mostly the typical stuff. I am just a learner." For she had guessed what the girl was getting at. She held out her hand, saying, "I am Dyani S'linae, daughter of Aiyana S'linae, and Dorota Silver-Striker." she smiled, to emphasize friendly feelings.
The girl grinned, and said, "I am Karona Selensdaughter, my father is mayor of this little village."
The Term Mayor confused Dyani, but she meerly shrugged, and said, "I am glad to meet you, Karona."
And this started a friendship that would last a lifetime...

When the war party came back, they came home to an odd site. The Human Mayor of Tatalthin was talking to Aiyana. Anaya walked up to Aiyana and asked what was going on, and she responded with, "This is Tork, Mayor of Tatalthin, he is here to talk about Dyani, and Karona's friendship. Also, Dyani is off somewhere, go find her."
Anaya was not happy. This went against everything the Magi-Warriors were taught. Trust nothing, Remember Everything, Fight for the Goddess. The humans had their Deity, the C'Nero worshiped dirt, and Mountains, but the M'Laniri warshipped the Goddess.
Anaya found Dyani near a riverbed, but said nothing, what is that girl doing? she thought to herself.
Dyani sat there, concentrating for the better part of an hour on her palm. The very center of it, where she had drawn a moon eclipsing the sun, when Anaya snuck up, she was saying anchient words, words anyone but the Magi-Warriors had forgotten. The Effect was instantanious. Two things happened that day, She passed out, and the magic caused her Dark Black hair to turn Stark White.
